This gluten-free vegan banana bread is moist. In fact, it has a very similar texture to what you would expect from any good, hearty banana bread. It’s a heavy loaf that doesn’t weigh a ton, but don’t let the weight fool you. This is still good fun as a dessert, not a door stopper!
The taste is sweet, and the combination of maple, banana and chocolate is divine. Gluten-free flour adds some “different” light nuances (this is not wheat flour after all), but we really like to be different. But don’t take my word for it – try the recipe below for yourself!

Banana bread has to be my all time favorite bread. My mom used to make it all the time when I was growing up and now I make it whenever there are black bananas in the fruit bowl (either that or putting it in a smoothie).
I’ve been trying to eat more plant based food lately, so I wanted to make a vegan version of banana bread. The good news is that it is easy to make and is indistinguishable from the usual kind!
Bananas do an excellent job of holding vegan chocolate chip banana bread together; you don’t even need to use an egg substitute.
Paleo Vegan Chocolate Chip Banana Bread
It made me wonder why you even have to use eggs in the first place… I seriously couldn’t tell the difference in texture or taste between this banana bread and the non-vegan version.
Sun oil, almond milk and brown sugar help to retain moisture; and I used part buckwheat (or whole wheat) flour to make it just a touch healthier.
I added dark chocolate chips because banana and chocolate go well together; but you can leave it if you want; or use chopped walnuts and/or raisins instead.
I topped the bread with blueberry glaze and banana chips, just to be photogenic. This is completely optional and does not require flavor; but I like purple and yellow together.

The Best Vegan Banana Bread
Other ingredients you can add to banana bread for a change: hazelnuts or pecan nuts, coconut flakes, dried fruits, such as apricots.
This is the best part. Making this banana bread is really easy, I promise! If you’re already eating plant-based, you should have plenty of produce available!
First, make sure you have 4 very ripe bananas (like ripe black skin). You will also need 1 medium ripe or green banana for garnish, but this is optional, so if you don’t have one, that’s okay!
In a bowl, first mash the bananas, then add the wet ingredients: flax seeds, vegetable milk, melted coconut oil, maple syrup and vanilla extract.
Banana Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Bread
In another bowl, mix the dry ingredients: coconut sugar, rolled oats, baking soda, baking powder, salt, flour and vegan chocolate chips.
Finally, add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mix to combine, transfer to a pan and put in the oven to cook. And that’s it!
The preparation time should be only 10 minutes or so and you can do other things while the banana bread cooks for about 40-50 minutes.
We usually store our banana bread in an airtight container on the counter. Here it is kept for four days. So, more than half a week’s worth of food here!

You can also store it in the refrigerator, do this in an airtight container to prevent it from drying out and spoiling.
