I picked up a Raspberry Lemon Yogurt Muffin at Tim Hortons recently because it sounded healthy, but I was surprised when I saw the nutrition information – each muffin has 24 grams of sugar but only 6 grams of protein. Is there a way to make your own healthier muffins?

This is known as the “Halth Halo” effect, which involves overestimating the health of an item based on a single claim—in this case, Greek yogurt can cause a halo. I bet you’re not the only one who’s reached for this muffin takeaway in hopes of making a healthy choice.

I tell my clients that the most effective change they can make in their lives to be healthier is to prepare meals at home. The food industry is different from people, with huge amounts of salt, sugar and fat – more than you use in your own cooking. Instead of relying on takeout muffins for breakfast, I suggest you take 30 minutes on a Sunday afternoon to make your own high protein muffins. This berry orange protein muffin recipe contains flax seeds and Greek yogurt for a protein boost. Two muffins contain less than half the sugar (10 grams) and twice as much protein (12 grams) as a bag of muffins.
In a blender, mix all the ingredients except the berries. Mix until they are homogeneous. Transfer the batter to a large bowl and add the berries. Fill each muffin cup ¾ of the batter.
Bake for 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool for 5 to 10 minutes before removing the muffins from the tray. Allow to cool completely at room temperature before storing in an airtight container for up to three days.

This breakfast sandwich is made with turkey sausage, seasoned egg whites and cheese. The calories are enough for a meal and you’ll get a good dose of protein in the morning. A little high in sodium but better than many other options.

Croissant is a bread that is rich in fat and calories. Top it with sausage, cheese and eggs, and you have a sandwich that provides 86 percent of the recommended daily maximum of saturated fat and 45 percent of the daily recommended maximum of sodium.
