I have tried making naan several different ways using different ingredients like water, buttermilk, milk or yogurt. I also tried with and without eggs, or just egg yolk. Then use different fats.
Of course, there is also the option of using different types of flour (bread flour, all-purpose flour or even wheat flour). Then you will notice that some recipes contain baking powder.
This recipe is my favorite mix of ingredients for this, with the proportions and method to achieve super soft, slightly chewy, perfectly fluffy and bubbly naan. That’s my idea of the best Naan!
How To Make Naan Recipe
Because the recipe makes medium-sized naan, but you can also divide the dough into 12 portions (instead of 6) in smaller portions, about 4 inches.

Naan is a soft, pillowy Indian-style flatbread traditionally made in a tandoor or cylindrical clay oven. The dough is beaten against the walls of the tandoor, where it sticks and is cooked quickly in the fire. Fortunately for all of us who don’t have a tandoor, it is possible to replicate the high heat and charred flavor of a clay oven with a very hot cast iron or non-stick pan.
I have tried many naan recipes with varying degrees of success; the first time i made this my husband was still talking about it the next day so i knew i had a winner. It’s pretty quick – saves growing time – and so rewarding, especially when you taste how good it is compared to store bought.
As you can see, the ingredients are very basic. Yoghurt and olive oil add some flavor and richness. Anise seeds give just a hint of licorice flavor; feel free to leave them out, or replace them with nigella seeds (which have a subtle onion flavor), poppy seeds or sesame seeds.
Easy Soft Flatbread Recipe (no Yeast)
Start by mixing the flour, baking powder, sugar, anise and salt in a large bowl, then whisk together.
Let rise in a warm place until about double in size, 1 to 1-1/2 hours. Tip: The hotter the spot, the faster it will rise.
Fill a small bowl with flour. Sprinkle some of the flour on a work surface. Pour the dough on top and sprinkle the dough with more flour.
Heat a non-stick or cast iron skillet over medium heat until very hot. While heating, roll one of the dough balls into a rectangle about 1/8 inch thick.

Place the dough in the hot, dry pan and cook until the surface is air-bubbled and the bottom is golden brown and comes out in spots.
