In this recipe, the bread is not baked but instead toasted dry (pan without oil). This makes it very fast.

Depending on where you are in the world and how you make your naan bread, it can be healthy. More often than not, what you eat with your bread can push you down an unhealthy path.

While traditional bread tends to be covered in oil or butter, my version is healthier than the original and has no fat!

In a large bowl, you’ll want to combine the flour, salt (if using), and Greek milk and mix until combined. If desired, use your hands to mix the batter until fully incorporated. Form a large ball of dough.

Then, you will light the wood or the kitchen. Sprinkle a little extra flour on the dough ball and place it on a floured surface. Press the dough ball into a circular shape and cut it into 8 equal pieces. Firm each dough and make a rough, oblong shape.

Finally, you will heat a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. When hot, place the batter on the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes, before turning over and cooking for a further 2 minutes. Repeat until all the dough is used and there are 8 loaves!

While Greek yogurt is the only type of milk that works well (along with vegan Greek milk), there are other alternatives to Greek milk that can be used.

Sour cream works the same way Greek yogurt does because it thickens and holds together. You can replace Greek yogurt with sour cream.

If you plan to enjoy the bread within 3 days, there is no need to refrigerate it.

To store in the refrigerator: You should avoid storing unprepared dough in the refrigerator, as it will become sticky as it sits for a long time. You will need to add extra flour for it to rise properly in the bread.

Naan can be leavened or unleavened, Indian versions often contain leaven. It is common to use the pieces that are broken off to find and eat food with your hand.

In the Indian tradition, Naan is cooked in the tandoor oven, but there are not many in one of them. So here we do without the tandoor oven and use a heavy cast iron pan instead to achieve a very similar result.

I have tried making it many different ways using different ingredients such as water, fat, milk or milk. I tried with and without eggs, or just with egg yolk. Then use different fats.

Of course, there is also the option of using different types of flour (bread flour, all-purpose flour or even wheat flour). Then you will notice some recipes with baking powder.

My Indian Naan recipe is also great because it’s so easy to make at home! You only need a few ingredients to make the dough, and the shaping and cooking process is fun and easy to do.

By the way, it’s a great recipe to make with the kids! Kids love working with bread dough, and this one is great because it’s cooked on the stove, not in the oven. That way, they can see it being cooked right in front of them.

Naan is essentially a simple flat bread similar to pita bread or even tortilla. It is part of traditional Indian cuisine and is usually cooked in a clay oven called a tandoor. The flour is mixed, then I make it, and finally I put it on the edge of the hot tandoor. Baked crispy on the bottom and bubbly on top. They are lightly browned, even charred and absolutely delicious!

Pita bread is usually a basic recipe, using flour, water, yeast, oil and salt. However, Naan bread is enriched with milk and sometimes with butter and eggs. The result is delicious and chewy, perfect for eating plain or with a sweet entree.

So is naan healthy? Like most baked goods, it can be… or it can be a little fuzzy, made with unhealthy ingredients and lots of preservatives. AND, high carbs. 😬

This version, however, is definitely on the healthy side, thanks to the simple ingredients: cream and flour. This is right! No hydrogenated oil, sugar or other questionable ingredients here. An easy and healthy side dish that everyone will love in seconds!
