The health conscious 33-year-old knows that muffins are often packed with calories. But Pickles thinks — well, hopes — that he’s found two grains that are nearly as nutritious as a whole-grain bowl, oatmeal topped with nuts.

Her top pick is the mixed strawberry muffin, made by Industrial Muffins and sold at Dark Horse Espresso Bar.

Pickles, who eats the industrial creation once or twice a week, likes the muffin’s short ingredient list after her morning spin class. A low-fat, dairy-free muffin made with oats, flour, bananas, water, honey and baking soda and topped with blueberries, raspberries and blueberries. According to the baking website, a muffin contains 368 calories.

Delica’s Kitchen, a popular lunch counter known for its Superfood Muffins, sandwiches and pastries, is another Pickles option.

As the name suggests, these muffins are made with good-for-you ingredients, including flax, corn and oats, corn, raisins and walnuts. It’s delicious.

Depending on their size and weight – each contains a grapefruit; The Industrial Mix Strawberry Muffins weighed in at 294 grams, or about half a pound—I thought I was going to be the bad nutrition news anchor.

“No. It’s too bad,” she says, when I open the Industrial Muffin clocks in at 848 calories — the caloric equivalent of three Egg McMuffins. The baking site has double the calorie count.

The 177 gram Delica Superfood Muffin is also healthy and low in calories. When I tried it, it had 705 calories and 25 grams of fat.

According to registered dietitian Carol Harrison, neither muffin is large enough to be considered healthy. A properly portioned muffin, he says, is the size of a small apple, not a grapefruit.

“It’s great that these muffins are made with real, wholesome ingredients,” she says. “But most of us don’t have room in our diets for an 800-calorie breakfast several times a week.”

Muffins, he says, are another example of large portions of our food environment. Portion sizes are at least double, she says, even if most meals are soups or muffins, sandwiches or spaghetti dinners.

“I would love for coffee shops to see portion size when it comes to muffins,” says Harrison, adding that small muffins — the size you’d make at home — sold with apples or oranges or cheese would be ideal.

Since our lab’s nutrition count differs from that published by Industrial Muffins, I reached out to bakery owner Eleni Scott for comment.

Scott said he used the software to calculate the nutritional information of muffins based on batch size and the type and amount of ingredients. He adds that he agrees with the published nutrition facts and that consumers like to eat large cups throughout the day.

“I’m a fitness nut and I eat a muffin every day,” says Scott. “And I would never eat a high-calorie muffin.

For comparison, a Cran Apple Walnut Bran Muffin at Tim Hortons weighs 115 grams and has 350 calories. Considering that an industrial muffin is about 2.5 times the weight of a Tim Hortons muffin, Harrison said the lab-generated numbers for a 295-gram baked product make sense.

According to Harrison, nutritional analysis from an accredited laboratory is more reliable than software database data, which may contain unknown errors.

After learning that industrial muffins contain 850 calories, Pickles decides to dig into the bowls next to the cafe. Her new breakfast staple is a linen bagel topped with almond butter and a banana.

“If I’m going to eat anything with that many calories,” she says of the two muffins, “it’s going to be a slice of chocolate cake.”

Less than 2 percent of the carbs in these mega-muffins come from fiber, which provides just one gram. Perhaps the healthiest thing about these muffins is the 19 grams of fat, mostly from soybean oil—a heart-healthy source. (Only one of the three national chains tested used oil as a fat source in their muffins.)

Low-fat blueberries are definitely not better—if not worse. While they have fewer calories than their regular counterparts, they still contain the same amount of sugar (40 grams, or 10 teaspoons) and about 50 percent of the sodium (540 milligrams per muffin!).

By comparison, the Big Muffin recipe bakes blueberry muffins that weigh about 2 ounces — less than half the size of a cafe muffin — and contain 120 calories. They’re made with a blend of whole wheat, almond and white flour – with further refining, the recipe can be made entirely without refined grains. Canola oil provides many healthy fats; and double the amount of fresh blueberries you’d find in a regular recipe, adding flavor and natural sweetness. (In total, each muffin contains 5 grams of sugar, of which only 2 grams are added sugar.) The result is a blueberry muffin that’s light and fluffy, moist and delicious, and provides more energy than a typical cafe muffin.
