Healthy Banana Nut Bread Recipe With Applesauce
I perfected the banana bread recipe for my cookbook and wanted to share it with you here. This recipe has all the hallmarks of a classic banana bread: airy, moist, infused with delicious banana flavor and loved by kids and adults alike.
Vegan Banana Bread (easy + Healthy)
As you can see, my homemade banana bread has many redeeming qualities, most notably the fact that it won’t spike your blood sugar. However, you can keep them all to yourself. No one will ever know that this is healthy banana bread!
This recipe is flexible! Any of the following flours will work well. I like to use whole wheat flour and whole wheat flour – they offer all the nutrients of whole wheat without the typical nutty taste.
*To substitute oatmeal, you will need to use 2 1/2 cups, for the reasons detailed in my oatmeal guide.
Want to make your own banana bread with almond flour? You certainly can, but it’s not a simple substitute, so follow my almond flour banana bread recipe.
Guilt Free Healthy Banana Bread
For best results, it is important to measure the flour correctly. This is how flour is measured into cups using the “spoon and rocker” method:
Now that I’ve finally perfected this basic banana bread, feel free to modify this recipe and make it your own. Toss chopped pecans or walnuts into the batter! The same goes for chocolate chips. You can also add raisins, chopped nuts or banana slices.
Follow a special diet? With a few small changes, you can make this bread vegan (so dairy and egg free too) or gluten free. Check the recipe notes for details.
With this healthy banana bread recipe, you can make the best banana bread ever with just a few simple ingredients! It is made from whole wheat flour and naturally sweetened with honey or maple syrup. You can easily make vegan or gluten-free banana bread – see recipe notes for details. The recipe yields one loaf (about 10 slices).
Moist Applesauce Bread (w/whole Wheat Flour)
Storage suggestions: This bread is moist, so it will only keep for two to three days at room temperature. Store in the refrigerator for five to seven days, or in the freezer for up to three months. I like to slice the bread before I freeze it and thaw one slice at a time, letting them rest at room temperature or lightly toast them.
*Oil Options: I like coconut oil here. I used refined coconut oil and I can almost taste it in the final product. Olive oil can give muffins a vegetal note, if you’re into it (I tried it with California Ranch Olive’s “Everyday” variety and couldn’t even taste it). Vegetable oil has a neutral flavor, but the average vegetable/canola oil is highly processed, so I recommend using cold-pressed sunflower or grapeseed oil when possible.
**Flour Alternatives: Instead of wholemeal flour, you can use all-purpose flour, wholemeal baking flour, spelled flour, or a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend. Alternatively, substitute 2 ½ cups oatmeal.
Go vegan: use maple syrup instead of honey, replace eggs with flax eggs, and choose a non-dairy milk (I used almond milk) or water.
Zucchini Banana Or Applesauce Bread (grain Free & Naturally Sweetened)
Make it less fat: I’d say this bread has a healthy amount of fat, but you can replace the oil with applesauce if you’re on a low-fat diet.

I know I say I’m obsessed with a lot of different recipes, which can make it hard to convince you of something. If I love so many, which one is it really?
My whole wheat banana bread totally blew me away. To be honest, I didn’t have high hopes. This bread was just a way to get rid of 3 ripe bananas and a jar of random applesauce. I make my regular banana bread with butter and all purpose flour because that’s where all the goodness is hiding. Well, after one bite of the banana bread, I was proven wrong.

Plus, this whole wheat banana bread slices and freezes like a dream. I like to have a loaf of bread waiting in the freezer for when I need a healthy home cooked breakfast option or snack for everyone, adults and toddlers alike. We all love it. (Especially with peanut butter spread on each slice!)
Did you know you can use your electric mixer to mash bananas? Smash or cut the peeled bananas into large chunks and place them in the mixing bowl – or use a regular mixing bowl and hand mixer. Start mixing on low, then gradually increase the speed to medium-high as you break the bananas into a banana puree. You can use this bowl for the rest of the banana bread ingredients. I make this for my banana pie too!
Unsweetened applesauce takes the place of butter or oil. I’m also very smart about added sugars – we really want the banana flavor to come through here. If you don’t want to add refined sweeteners to your healthy banana bread recipe, replace the brown sugar with coconut sugar. To keep this banana bread dairy-free, use non-dairy milk instead.
Healthy Banana Bread (sugar Free)
Then mix the dry ingredients and add to the wet ingredients. You need whole wheat, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. Mostly the same dry ingredients I use in my whole banana muffins. Finally, fold in the chopped walnuts. Nuts are completely optional. Sometimes I add chocolate chips and/or raisins.
For a healthier banana bread recipe, replace the butter with sugar-free applesauce, replace the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour, and replace some of the refined sugar with honey. With glowing reviews from taste testers and readers around the world, this quick bread doesn’t even taste shiny!
