Healthy Banana Bread Spelt Flour – Do you want to make someone’s day? Make them banana bread! Just yesterday, I said, “I’m going to bake banana bread,” and I saw a perfectly grown man’s eyes light up like a child on Christmas morning.
Banana bread is one of those all-American comfort food recipes that warms the whole house and makes everything better. Banana bread
Healthy Banana Bread Spelt Flour
I adapted this banana bread recipe for my cookbook and wanted to share it with you here. This recipe has all the hallmarks of classic banana bread – soft, moist, full of delicious banana flavor and loved by toddlers and adults alike.
Soft Moist Chocolate Banana Bread
As you can see, my homemade banana bread has several redeeming qualities, the main one being that it won’t send your blood sugar levels for a loop. However, you can keep them to yourself. No one can tell this is healthy banana bread!
This recipe is flexible! Any of the following flours will work well. I like to use white wheat flour and whole wheat cake flour – they provide all the nutrients of wheat, without the nutty taste.
*To substitute oat flour, you will need to use 2 1/2 cups, as explained in my oat flour guide.
Want to make your own banana bread with almond flour? You can do it, but it’s not easy, so follow my almond flour banana bread recipe instead.
The Best Spelt Flour Banana Bread
For best results, it’s important to measure your flour correctly. Here’s how to measure flour into cups using the “spoon and swoop” method:
Now that I’ve finally perfected this basic banana bread, feel free to modify this recipe and make it your own. Add chopped pecans or walnuts to the batter! The same goes for chocolate chips. You can also add raisins, chopped dry fruits or banana slices.
Follow a special diet? With a few minor changes, you can make this bread vegan (dairy-free and egg-free, too) or gluten-free. Check the recipe notes for details.
With this healthy banana bread recipe, you’re just a few simple ingredients away from the best banana bread ever! It is made from whole wheat flour and naturally sweetened with honey or maple syrup. You can easily make this banana bread vegan or gluten free – check the recipe notes for details. Recipe yields 1 loaf (about 10 slices).
Healthy Banana Bread
Storage Instructions: This bread is moist, so it will only last two or three days at room temperature. Store in the refrigerator for five to seven days or in the freezer for three months or longer. I like to slice the bread and thaw the individual slices before chilling, either by letting them rest at room temperature or by dipping them a bit.
*Oil Alternatives: I like coconut oil here. I used virgin coconut oil and I can’t taste it in the final product. Olive oil can give muffins an herbal note if you’re into it (I tested it with California Olive Ranch’s “Everyday” variety and couldn’t even taste it). Vegetable oil has a neutral flavor, but regular vegetable/canola oil is highly processed, so I recommend using cold-pressed sunflower or seed oil if possible.
**Flour Alternatives: Instead of whole wheat flour, you can use a combination of all purpose flour, whole wheat cake flour, spelled flour or gluten free all purpose flour. Or, substitute 2 ½ cups oat flour.
Make it vegan: use maple syrup instead of honey, replace eggs with hemp eggs, and choose non-dairy milk (I used almond milk) or water.
Better For You Banana Bread
Make it low-fat: I would argue that this bread has a healthy amount of fat, but if you’re on a low-fat diet, you can replace the fat with applesauce.

Pumpkin Bread With Spelt Flour And Maple Syrup
Bananas: Use ripe and soft bananas. A ripe banana will be harder to digest and less sweet
Ground Cinnamon and Nutmeg: The spice works wonderfully in banana bread and adds a nice warm and woody flavor. However, you can leave it out or replace it with your favorite spices.
Whole Grain Flour: Any kind of whole grain flour will work here. If you like, you can substitute your favorite flour (gluten-free, rye, almond). For regular banana bread, choose plain flour.
Ground almonds: If you don’t have ground almonds or prefer not to use them, substitute the same amount of flour.
Eggless Banana Bread
Toppings: Filling options include nuts and seeds, dried banana chips, fresh banana slices, or whole bananas cut in half lengthwise and topped with the inside facing up. Place all the fillings on top of the cake mixture before baking.
If the skin of the banana is completely black, it can be stopped. In this case, it is probably not worth using it. I have used bananas with skins that range from pale yellow to brown spots and have found that this always works well. Bananas with brown-dotted skins will be softer and easier to mash, but the flavor isn’t really affected. Bananas with green skin are less ripe and are firmer and less sweet. To speed up the ripening process, tie the bananas loosely in a brown paper bag.
My favorite to go with bananas is walnuts. Banana and walnuts are the perfect combination of sweet vs bitter and smooth vs crunchy, often found in banana bread recipes. Peanut butter and banana is obviously another classic combination that is well known. This salted peanut butter can be used to spread on prepared bread slices. Other nuts to try: chopped almonds, pistachios or pecans.
To make this recipe your own, try adding different toppings or mixing the toppings into the banana bread. Or why not try mixing Nutella or other nut butters. If you’re not a big fan of nuts, you can try blueberries, chopped dates, chocolate chips, dried bananas, sultanas, black sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, orange peel or lime zest.
Vegan Banana Bread (oil Free, No Refined Sugar)
Banana bread will stay fresh and moist for at least 3-4 days if stored properly. Cover the banana bread with two layers of cling film or foil. Then store at room temperature, in a sealed container.
