After moving to San Diego, I started visiting my grandmother a few times a week. She lives in the same area, just a mile away!

Sometimes we watch a movie, sometimes we drive downtown to watch a Padres baseball game, but most of the time we just have puppy dates. I take my little dog to my grandmother’s house to socialize with her two little terriers for a few hours a day. (Before we moved in, my dog had little or no social skills because he was an “only child”!)

Gluten Free Banana Bread With Chocolate Chips

Grandma and I used to chat for a bit in the evenings when I picked up my puppy, and she always sent me a newspaper about crosswords and puzzles. I love working on them while relaxing before bed!

Considering how much I baked, Grandma also left all the ripe bananas on the counter that she didn’t have time to eat with her newspaper. When she handed me a small, very spotted banana earlier this month, I realized it wasn’t big enough for a normal banana bread…

So I made this healthy Chocolate Banana Bread instead! It has the same classic traditional banana bread flavors you know and love — sweet fruit, smooth texture, and lots of chocolate!

You only need a few daily ingredients to make this healthy banana bread. Start with whole wheat flour (or gluten-free if you prefer!). As long as you use a banana with more brown spots than yellow spots, your quick bread will be sweet enough that you can’t taste the dough!

We recommend using very ripe, very brown bananas! For best results, your banana should be very soft on the inside. These bananas are naturally sweeter than their pure yellow counterparts, so you only need to add a small amount of pure maple syrup (like this one) to enhance the sweetness.

To keep the banana bread soft like the traditional recipe, you’ll add Greek yogurt instead of butter or vegetable oil. You know how much I love Greek yogurt! It adds the same moisture for a fraction of the calories and also adds a protein boost to your banana bread!

Since this is a small batch recipe, you’ll be dividing the dough between two small bread pans (like this one!). A big plus in this? Your banana bread cooks a lot faster than usual, so you can eat it a lot sooner! And of course, don’t forget to press some mini chocolates into the top of the loaf! (These are my favorites by far!)

I would love to see your banana bread and feature it in my Sunday series of reviews!

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe (video)

This banana bread is perfect when you only have a small ripe banana on the counter… or when you don’t want tempting leftovers lying around! It’s full of naturally sweet fruit flavors and chocolate chips that make it even more irresistible. Leftovers will keep for at least a week if stored in an airtight container, and they’ll solidify too!

Note: For gluten-free flour, use the following: ½ cup (60g) millet, ¼ cup (30g) tapioca, ¼ cup (30g) brown rice flour, and ½ teaspoon xanthan gum . Many store-bought gluten-free flour mixes will also work when measured this way.

Whole wheat flour can be replaced with white flour, bread flour or all-purpose flour.

For best results, use the most ripe, blackest, most spotted banana you can find! Those that are more brown than yellow are ideal. Measure your bananas with a measuring cup and spoon OR a kitchen scale. Not all “very small” bananas are the same size!

Banana puree and Greek yogurt combined make ½ cup. If you have just over 6 tablespoons of mashed banana, reduce the amount of Greek yogurt by the same amount and vice versa.

This recipe can be doubled and baked in a 9×5 inch bread pan! Bake at 350°F for 40 – 50 minutes, or until center is firm to the touch and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

Chocolate Chip Walnut Banana Bread

Before you start yawning over ANOTHER banana bread recipe, give me a chance to explain. I mean, I get it, you’re probably wondering why my Chocolate Banana Bread is the best? You have your grandma’s best recipes. Or you’ve made my Baked Coconut Banana Bread and don’t think you need to look any further. But I’m not the type to leave me alone… you already know that about me. I even claim to make the BEST banana muffin… absolutely the BEST, by the way.

But I will tell you that I have officially cracked the banana bread code. This chocolate banana bread that I’m sharing with you today is EVERYTHING.

Let me explain why this is the ultimate banana bread recipe you’ll ever need. First, it was very wet (sorry). This recipe has butter as well as sour cream, which not only makes it incredibly soft, but also tastes great, unlike many banana bread recipes that are made with butter. Of course, I use walnuts in this recipe, which you can skip if you want, but I highly recommend you don’t, at least the first time you’re making this recipe.

BUT the real secret to this recipe’s amazing moisture and banana flavor is… wait… CLEANS. You add some finely chopped onions and some thinly sliced onions. Your mind has been blown away, hasn’t it?

Easy Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe

Adding sliced bananas to bread creates small pieces of banana that are not normally present when mashed. It’s just not enough to make it soft, that wouldn’t be good… just the perfect thing your banana bread has been missing all this time. I tell you it’s legal.

No! If you don’t like nuts, you can skip them altogether. You can even add a few leftover chocolate chips, or even no chocolate chips! My banana bread recipe is perfect. You can even try adding different flavor combinations of chips and nuts!

You can easily substitute pecans in this recipe. I recommend using softer nuts like walnuts or pecans just to preserve the texture of the bread. If you want to experiment, such as pistachios or peanuts in this recipe, just chop them up!

Right! Freezing banana bread is a great way to save anything you might have or duplicate the recipe and save the loaf for later. Just defrost the banana bread at room temperature, slice and serve!

It was amazingly warm, straight from the oven. And it tastes even better with butter.

BUT the thing about this Chocolate Banana Cake is that it tastes great while warm… but it’s also GOOD the next day! The flavors have a chance to blend and become really soft and friendly.
