The health-conscious 33-year-old knows that muffins are often full of calories. But Pickles thought—yes, hoped—that he had found two muffins that were almost as nutritious as a bowl of whole-grain, nut-covered oatmeal.

The best choice is the mixed berry muffin made by Industrial Muffin and sold at Dark Horse Espresso Bar.

Pickles, who eats industrial creations once or twice a week, after her morning spinning class, is impressed by the muffins’ short ingredient list. Muffins Low-fat, dairy-free muffins made with wheat, flour, banana, water, honey and baking powder and topped with cranberries, raspberries and blueberries. According to the bakery’s website, one muffin contains 368 calories.

The superfood muffin at Delica Kitchen, a popular lunch counter known for its sandwiches and pastries, is another of Pickle’s muffins to choose from.

As the name suggests, these muffins are made with good-for-you ingredients, including flax, bran and oats, prunes, raisins and walnuts. This very tasty.

By size and weight – each about as thick as a grapefruit; The industrial mixed berry muffin weighs 294 grams, or about half a pound — I guess I’ll be the malnutrition news anchor.

“No. Sit. That’s pretty bad,” he says, after I reveal the industrial muffin jam at 848 calories — the caloric equivalent of three Egg McMuffins. And more than twice as many calories as the bakery reports on its website.

Delica superfood muffins, which weigh 177 grams, also contain calories for a seemingly healthy pastry. The one I tried contained 705 calories and 25 grams of fat.

Registered dietitian Carol Harrison said the two muffins were too large to be considered healthy. Properly portioned muffins, he says, are about the size of a small apple, not a grapefruit.

“It’s great that these muffins are made with real, healthy ingredients,” she says. “But most of us don’t have enough wiggle room in our diets for an 800-calorie breakfast several times a week.”

Muffins, he adds, are another example of the super-sized portions in our food environment. Most meals, whether they’re soup or muffins, sandwiches or spaghetti dinners, are at least twice the recommended serving size, he says.

“I would love to see coffee shops get the portion sizes right when it comes to muffins,” Harrison said, adding that a small muffin — the size you make at home — sold with an apple or orange or a slice of cheese would be ideal.

Because our lab-generated nutrients differ drastically from those published by Industrial Muffin, I reached out to bakery owner Eleni Scott for comment.

Scott says he uses a program to calculate muffin nutritional information based on batch size and type and amount of ingredients. She said she approves of the nutrition facts listed, adding that consumers love big muffins and snack on them all day.

“I’m a healthy person and I eat my muffin every day,” says Scott. “And I would never eat a muffin with that many calories, never.”

For comparison, consider that the cran apple walnut bran muffin at Tim Hortons weighs 115 grams and contains 350 calories. Given that an industrial muffin is 2.5 times the weight of a Tim Hortons muffin, Harrison says the lab-generated figure for 295 grams of industrial cookies makes sense.

And, adds Harrison, nutritional analysis by an accredited laboratory is more reliable than information generated by a software package, which may have unknown errors in its database.

Now that he knows the industrial muffin contains 850 calories, Pickles plans to skip the cafeteria candy. Her new take-and-go breakfast is a flax bagel, topped with almond butter and banana.

“If I were to eat something with that many calories,” he says of two muffins, “it would be a piece of chocolate cake.”

However, after looking at the nutritional information for 10 muffins, we found that one muffin was higher than the other. One Coffee Cake muffin contains almost 100 grams of carbs, and eating them all for breakfast can leave you bloated and lethargic all day. In addition, 52 grams of sugar is equivalent to consuming more than five original glazed donuts from Krispy Kreme. Try to eat a third or half of these muffins and save the rest for breakfast at the end of the week.

If you’re eating a 2,000-calorie diet, the American Heart Association recommends that you consume no more than 120 calories from saturated fat. If you just eat a vanilla chocolate chip muffin, you’re more than halfway there. Although this muffin is lower in calories, fat, and sodium than the previous two options, it has more carbs and sugar. If these are your favorite muffins from Costco, consider ordering them for special occasions.

But if you eat just half of a muffin (which is a serving size), you’ll keep your sugar intake below 20 grams — and that can help prevent a sugar crash later in the day.

Cheesecakes in Costco’s bakery section are popular, including the Guava Cheesecake. A nice thing about the muffin version is that it makes portion control easy. If you really want a sweet muffin, this is a better choice than some of the other options available at your local warehouse.

These sweet Mexican muffins usually contain eggs, flour and sugar. The Costco version has added ingredients that keep these cookies fresh until they reach your kitchen table. At the end of the day, there are still tons of calories, carbs, fat, and sugar in Costco’s Mantecada Muffin.
