Testing savory recipes is always a problem in this house, but when it comes to baking, it’s a pretty good deal. Although, when you see me post a sweet, you can be sure it’s a big hit. This chocolate banana bread with walnuts and cream will prove it. You’ll want it for breakfast, an afternoon snack, and an after-dinner dessert. It will not last long 🙂
Chocolate Walnut Banana Bread
When we moved into our new house in October, I decided that the kilo of dark brown bananas I had in the freezer would come with me – much to my husband’s chagrin, lol. But! I hate wasting food. And who in their right mind can get enough of banana bread? I just needed to get my ass finally and
So. Sour cream. Have you ever baked with it? That’s pretty cool. It leaves you with a richer, denser texture, but still melts in your mouth. It also produces subtle sour notes. It might sound weird since we’re talking about cake here, but with the nutty flavor of the walnuts and the sweetness of the chocolate chips, it works. You can replace the cream with plain whole milk Greek yogurt, but you may get a spicier flavor. (I haven’t tried it yet. If you do, let me know in the comments!) However, I don’t want to use regular plain yogurt; it’s not as thick and contains too much liquid, which caused last week’s baking woes mentioned above.
During the research and planning stages of this banana bread, I couldn’t decide whether to add nuts or chocolate chips. I usually prefer the former because I like getting that crunch, but who doesn’t love the taste of chocolate? Unable to decide, I decided to use both. The top of the bread is garnished with a halved banana and chia seeds for added nutrition. Both are completely optional, but these banana halves add a delicious stickiness you might not want to miss. You can also cut the banana into layers and put them all over the top. I’m just in love with how these halves look!

Every family has their own perfect version of banana bread. It’s ours. It has become a firm family favourite, a real treat. With just the right amount of chocolate, enough to satisfy any chocolate lover’s craving but not so much that it overpowers the banana, this is banana bread after all.
It also has the right nutty flavor and has walnuts added to add some texture and richness to your bread. I added a sliced banana to this bread and it makes a nice extra caramel after baking, it’s optional but highly recommended.
The Best Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Recipe
This banana bread should keep for at least 3 days, none of mine have graced my kitchen long enough to wrap it up and store it! Wrap it tightly with foil or cling film to prevent it from drying out. Put it in the fridge to make it last longer.
If you can. Let the bread cool, then wrap tightly and freeze for up to 3 months. To thaw, remove from freezer and refrigerate overnight to thaw.

Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Walnut Banana Bread
So this Chocolate Banana Bread recipe has been on my blog for a long time. And for some reason it occurred to me that my kids don’t really like banana bread. Don’t ask me why because I have no idea what made me think that. Maybe the only time I suggested banana bread, someone gave me a dirty look and I was so deeply offended that I stopped making it. Or something less immature and ridiculous.
Banana bread. And I recently posted images from this post on social media and decided this post needed a photo update and a video. So I made a loaf. I actually made two loaves because I decided that the original recipe (which called for small pieces of chocolate) didn’t photograph as well as the full one.
