When I first shared this recipe in 2016, a Google search for “chocolate muffins” returned about 1.2 million results. You will see that this number is almost 64 million today. 🤯 Despite the stiff competition, I still firmly believe that I have the best chocolate chip muffin recipe… yes, better than that!
Double Chocolate Chunk Muffins
What makes these muffins so good? Well, for starters, they’re huge – we’re talking bakery-style chocolate bars! They’re perfectly soft and gooey (unlike the crunchy biscuits I just shared), and of course, they’re loaded with chocolate chips. As a finishing touch, they are sprinkled with coarse sugar, so the tops are not only slightly crunchy, but they are kind.
. These muffins are actually featured in a New York City bakery, but luckily, you don’t have to plan a trip to NYC to try them.
Like my basic muffin recipe, this recipe uses a technique from the Kitchen Whisperer for nice, long muffin tops. I use this method on my bananas too, and many of you have commented to let me know how well it works for you.
Besides the technique, these muffins use carefully selected ingredients to make the best of their title. Here are some game changers we use today:

Sam’s Tip: Don’t have jumbo muffin liners? You can make muffin liners out of parchment paper! Not only does this save you a trip to the store, but it gives you the look of a bakery.
Resting the batter isn’t necessary, but doing so gives us luscious chocolate keys and long muffin tops. If you’ve made my Butter Pancakes, you know that I like to leave them frosting, because the pan is preheated for the same reason, the dough thickens and the result is smoother!
Now comes the special technique for making chocolate muffins that stand out from the rest! You start your oven at a high temperature, and without opening the door, you will reduce the temperature about a third of the way through baking! This little trick livens up the bottom of your muffins without burning (or drying them out). Isn’t it nice?
Sam’s tip: (carefully) remove your chocolate chip cookies from the oven 5-10 minutes after they come out of the oven. If you put them in a hot pan, the bottom may get wet.
Bakery Style Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Muffins
We use a different temperature technique here, which plays a big role in helping the muffins rise. But another important step is to knead your dough. The longer it sits, the thicker it will become, and thicker air means longer beads! I recommend letting your dough rest for at least 15 minutes, but if you can manage to let it rest for an hour or so, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful long muffin balls!
Your chocolate chip cookies will stay fresh when stored in an airtight container at room temperature. You can freeze them!
If you try these, I’d love for you to leave a comment to let me know how they stack up against the 64 million (and counting) other chocolate muffin recipes out there!
Let’s eat together! I’ll walk you through all the steps in my written guide and video below! If you try this recipe, be sure to tag me on Instagram, and you can also find me on YouTube and Facebook.

This step of letting the muffin batter sit is optional, but it will help the batter thicken and eventually create long muffin tops. Letting the dough sit for up to 60 minutes also works and will give even higher peaks.
Storage Store leftover muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Cooked dogs can also be refrigerated and frozen in an airtight container for several months.

Despite being fully motivated to stick to her diet, she eventually admitted that she struggled with breakfast. Because of her long morning commute, she usually ate after arriving at work, but her usual packet of Quaker instant oatmeal just wasn’t cutting it anymore. She needed new ideas!
She wanted to start eating bananas. She stopped the chocolate treats. (What? No! Chocolate is practically an inalienable human right!) She enjoyed baking and didn’t mind freezing leftovers.
After putting these three things together, I played around in my kitchen and ended up with these beauties… Chocolate Chip Muffins!
